Enjoy a summery bourbon cocktail and get buzzed about bees with entomologist and author May Berenbaum. As you sip your beverage, Dr. Berenbaum will reveal bees as fellow drinkers, ones who work hard for their elixir. You’ll learn that what bees drink and how they drink is a complicated and fascinating affair. This is sure to be an entertaining evening with one of the region’s preeminent entomologists who is sure to inspire a sense of awe and appreciation for our insect world.
Pick up a copy of her cookbook, Honey, I'm Homemade, and have it signed by the author. Sales of the book will benefit the University of Illinois Pollinatarium--the first freestanding science outreach center in the nation devoted to flowering plants and their pollinators.
About the Speaker
May Berenbaum heads the Entomology department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she is both a professor and a chair of entomology. In addition to looking at dwindling pollinator populations, her research has also focused on the tangled relationships between insects and host-plants.
She chaired the Committee on the Status of Pollinators in North America for the National Research Council was president of the Entomological Society of America. Berenbaum has written a number of books on insects and she is also the founder of the Insect Fear Film Festival, which showcases the strange (and usually very scientifically implausible) collection of giant bugs, swarms, and assorted insect anomalies that have appeared on the big screen over the years.
