Course Description

Join botanist Chris Benda for a guided tour of the fens of Illinois. The calcareous fen is one of the more rare plant community types in Illinois.  Calcareous fens are wetlands created by glaciers that have perennial subsurface flow of water that is rich in calcium, resulting in an extremely basic pH.  Only plants adapted to such an extreme pH thrive in this community, such as grass-of-parnassus, Kalm's lobelia, and false asphodel. This tour will visit several high-quality examples of fens, located in dedicated Illinois nature preserves in the Chicago region.

Instructor: Chris Benda, plant ecologist
Notes: Held outdoors. Limit 18
