Course Description

Learn the identifying characteristics of local shorebirds.  Learn the types and characteristics of shorebirds found in northern Illinois in the classroom, then spend a morning searching local hotspots to identify these birds in the field.

Shorebirds need shallow-water and mud flat habitats, which are rich in the small invertebrates they feed on. These seasonal, ephemeral habitats can make shorebird viewing a challenge, so the knowledge of an expert guide is very helpful.

On Thursday, attend a lecture at the Arboretum to learn about the characteristics of shorebirds. Then on Saturday, rely on the expertise of your instructor to visit the best locations for shorebird viewing. Driving directions will be provided about a week before class.

Instructor: Denis Kania, ornithologist and educator
Notes: Held indoors and outdoors; includes walking on trails and uneven terrain. Please dress to be outdoors each day. Limit 12
Supplies: Please bring a water bottle, binoculars, and field guides
