Northern Europe Collection

The Scots pine has a broad pyramidal habit with fairly short, blue-green leaves and orange-red bark.

The quiet mystery of the cool and dark spruce plot in the Northern Europe Collection at The Morton Arboretum will make you feel as if you were hiking in the forests of like Norway and Romania.

The Northern Europe Collection displays plants native to the European continent, where tree species are far less diverse than Central Europe due to the harsh climate. As soon as you walk into this collection, the large spruce plot lets you imagine you are immersed in the region's coniferous forests that are characterized by a mixture of Norway spruce (Picea abies), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), and moor birch (Betula pubescens). Along the southern and eastern edge of the spruce plot are nineteen different species that are placed to take advantage of the cool and moist environment created by the spruce plot.
